The Two Artists Who Built Xenogears

Xenogears was drawn by one man and engineered by another, and you can feel the seam every time a cutscene ends and a battle begins. The people came from Kunihiko Tanaka, who did the character design and the face art. The machines — the Gears — came from Junya Ishigaki, a mechanical designer. The split at the centre of the game

The division is built into the engine, not just the credits. On paper the roles are clean: Tanaka is credited with character design, Ishigaki with mechanical design, Yoshinori Ogura as co-mechanical, Tsutomu Terada and Tadahiro Usuda on supporting characters and monsters, Yasuyuki Honne as art director and Koh Arai as chief artistic design, over Tetsuya Takahashi's direction and Yasunori Mitsuda's score. But the split is not just a list of names. The human characters are hand-drawn sprites; the Gears are polygon models — people on paper, machines in geometry, both running at once.

That reversal was deliberate. Final Fantasy VII, built at Square around the same years, put polygon characters on flat pre-rendered backdrops. Xenogears did the opposite: hand-drawn characters moving through fully 3D environments. It came from Takahashi's conviction that pre-rendered CG backgrounds could not express the world he wanted, so the team pushed everything into real geometry.

The machines were the point from the start. The game began as Project Noah, grew out of a Final Fantasy VII story proposal that was set aside, and started as a team assembled to follow Chrono Trigger. In the fiction, Gears are giant humanoid war machines dug out of ancient ruins and reverse-engineered by warring nations — hardware with a documented past, not mascots. Two of those nations, Aveh and Kislev, spent centuries fighting over who had excavated the most of them. Fei Fong Wong pilots the Gear Weltall, and the whole plot bends around that machine. Square billed the game, on PlayStation in February 1998, as a "new-generation cybernetic RPG." The machines were in the marketing before they were ever in your party.

Kunihiko Tanaka drew the people

Tanaka came up drawing heroes at Falcom. Born in Kawasaki in 1970, he started as a manga artist and illustrator, then went in through a game studio — joining Nihon Falcom as a staff artist before going freelance, with a commercial debut in 1991. His early credits are the foundational PC-era JRPGs: Ys III: Wanderers from Ys, Dragon Slayer: The Legend of Heroes, Dinosaur, Popful Mail. He learned to draw people you remember on hardware that could barely show a face — the exact skill he brought to Xenogears character design.

On Xenogears he did the character design and the face original art — the portraits themselves, not only the concept sketches. His cast is the game at eye level: Fei Fong Wong, Elly, Citan Uzuki, Bart, Billy Lee Black, Emeralda Kasim, Krelian. The line is elegant but slightly severe, clean and composed, cool enough to keep the faces from ever being cute. Tanaka has named the early-90s OVA Genocyber, dark and hard-edged, as an influence on the game's art style, and you can see where that severity comes from.

Here is what most players finish the game without registering. A painting sits at the very centre of the story: Lacan, a man who looks like Fei, painting Mother Sophia, a woman who looks like Elly. The portrait you keep seeing woven through the plot is, in-fiction, a painting — and out of fiction, it is the work of the game's own character artist. A Tanaka image is not cover art here; it is a plot device. Square knew what it had: for the game's 20th anniversary the company reproduced that Sophia portrait as a large fine-art print, retouched by Tanaka himself. Junya Ishigaki engineered the machines

Ishigaki is a mechanical designer, not a game artist. Born in Shizuoka in 1967, he is hardware by trade rather than an illustrator who happened to draw robots. His lineage runs through kaiju: in 1989 he was lined up to design monsters and mecha alongside Tohl Narita — the man who designed Ultraman and its creatures — on a project that collapsed before release. He debuted in 1990 on guest mecha for Brave Exkaiser, then spent years inside Sunrise's robot shows, his CV dense in Gundam: enemy suits in V Gundam, the Maganac in Gundam Wing, the Gundam Ashtaron in Gundam X, work on Turn A Gundam and Gundam AGE. He is described as a specialist in organic-looking mecha and a prolific creature designer — machines that read as if they were grown as much as bolted together. That sensibility is what Xenogears hired: Ishigaki on the main characters' Gears, with Ogura co-credited.

The Gears don't just look engineered. The game engineers them. A Gear's engine output sets both its attack power and its fuel capacity in the same number. Each Gear carries an output coefficient, and its attack is that coefficient multiplied by engine output — a stat sheet, not a mood. Its frame determines maximum HP; its armor sets defense; chassis and plating are modelled as separate things. Weight is a real constraint: a heavy Gear can carry heavy loadouts without penalty, but overload a light one and its speed drops and its turns come slowly. That is a documented load tolerance, not flavour text. The machines even run on a semi-perpetual engine — you charge to recover fuel, and boosting burns fuel each turn to halve the wait between actions.

They come as a designed fleet, each matched to a pilot: Weltall for Fei, Vierge for Elly, Brigandier for Bart, Heimdal for Citan, Renmazuo for Billy, Siebzehn for Maria, with Stier, Crescens and Wyvern among the rest. Weltall itself carries a documented evolution — Weltall, then Weltall-2, then Weltall-Id, and finally the white machine Xenogears — the same chassis re-engineered stage by stage. The systems treat each one as a real machine with power, tolerance and failure conditions — the concrete reason they read as machines, not toys.

Tip

Read a Gear as hardware in the menu. Engine output is the master number — it feeds both attack and fuel, so a bigger engine is a bigger gun and a bigger tank at once. Frame is your HP ceiling; armor is your defense; and weight, played against your loadout, sets your turn speed — overload a light Gear and you will feel it sag. Output, frame, armor, weight: the whole machine, spelled out on screen.

What Perfect Works keeps

The book is the proof, bound. The whole record sits in one volume: Xenogears Perfect Works ~the Real Thing~, published by DigiCube in 1998, a large A4 softcover of just over 300 pages with a fold-out poster. Its subtitle is its mission: to lay the world out as documented fact, framed as decoding the ending, "Episode V." Its own architecture is the two-artist split, printed. It gives pages 78 to 155, roughly seventy-eight of them, to the Gears: full-colour artwork, descriptions and specifications for twelve Gears, with black-and-white art and shorter entries for the rest, plus concept work for Deus, its angel-forms and various vessels.

The split you feel while playing is a page count you can measure. Perfect Works spends about seventy-eight pages on the Gears — art with specifications, machine by machine — and well over a hundred on Tanaka's side: biographies, timelines, and a gallery past page 270 with personal data down to age and measurements, a "What If" feature, and a long run of black-and-white concept art, the pencil before the paint. Specifications for the machines, biographies for the people. The book enacts the division it documents.

A dedicated science section explains the reasoning behind Deus, the Gears and the world's nanotechnology — the engineering written down in prose, sitting next to the art. Owners single out exactly this: the Gear structure and machine-design art, and explanations down to the fine details of clothing and Gear parts. It reproduces the working sketches, too, not just the finished illustrations — the rough line and the retouched face, side by side. Even the vessels and enemy forms get the settei treatment; the documentation habit extends to the whole hardware of the world.

The book went out of print and became a collector's item, and the 2014 reissue only arrived after roughly two thousand reprint-request votes stacked up. What people wanted back was not a strategy manual but the working record of two design languages — paper for the people, specifications for the machines, bound together in one object you can hold.

The look the Xeno series still runs on

The two languages outlived the studio. Xenogears never got its own sequel. One was reportedly gated behind a million sales; the game sold around 892,000, and resources were pulled toward Square's Final Fantasy film. Its core creators left the company and founded Monolith Soft, and the story-world forked — into Xenosaga, and then into Xenoblade. But the two visual hands set here came along.

Tanaka carried the character language across the fork. He designed the cast of Xenosaga Episode I, including KOS-MOS, co-designed with Kouichi Mugitani; he did character illustration on Episode II; he drew the full cast of Xenoblade Chronicles X in 2015; and he returned as a guest for Xenoblade Chronicles 2 in 2017. Ishigaki carried the mecha language the same way, designing machines across the Xenosaga trilogy. The engineered look followed the engineer.

For the game's 20th anniversary in 2018, the two reunited on the source: Square Enix produced Bring Arts figures of Fei, Elly and Weltall, Tanaka supervising the characters, Ishigaki handling the Gear. One hand on the person, one on the machine, twenty years on — the whole thesis in miniature.

The reputation held all the while. One influential magazine placed Xenogears among the most fervently admired PlayStation RPGs and called it its director's purest, most challenging work; it landed in the top ten of a Japanese readers' poll of an era's best games, and near the top of a most-wanted-sequel list years later. It was never even released in Europe, which only sharpened the cult around it. The look outlived the studio, the publisher and the hardware.
