What tends to get lost in English is how deliberate the choice was. Rather than end the game early, Takahashi made a call: the second half shifts, once the party escapes Solaris, into a largely narrated presentation — characters recounting events the first half would have let you play through. Weigh it honestly and the bet still comes out ahead. Xenogears aged better than Final Fantasy VII did — a hand-drawn sprite and a world you can look around hold up where FF7's early polygon models and locked painted rooms now read as very much of their moment. What it traded for that longevity was legibility and polish: a camera that occasionally gets in the way, characters that can look coarse against their surroundings.
